EXTRA funding of almost £1million has been given to Bromsgrove District Council by the government to help the local authority through the coronavirus crisis.

The council will receive £993,078 to help it deliver vital services, while Worcestershire County Council has been granted £10,520,528 in funding.

The additional funding, which brings the total amount received by the county to more than £25 million, is part of an extra £1.6bn funding package for councils announced by the government, doubling the total funding to £3.2bn.

The support will mean councils can continue to provide essential services, such as adult social care and children’s services, while also providing support to people impacted by the coronavirus.

Councils are playing an important part in the fight against coronavirus, providing more than half a million boxes of essential supplies nationwide, delivering grants to local businesses and continuing essential services, such as waste collection.

This announcement builds on other government measures, including allowing councils to defer the payment of business rates to central government and providing them with a combined £850 million in upfront social care grants, that will help with their cash flows so they can continue to deliver vital services.

Bromsgrove MP, Sajid Javid said: “I’m pleased that our local council has been able to benefit from this additional funding.

"This is part of the extra £3.2 billion the Government is providing to councils across England to ensure they have the resources they need during this difficult time.

“The team at Bromsgrove District Council and Worcestershire County Council are doing a fantastic job, in extremely challenging circumstances.

"This additional funding will help them support local residents. This is a challenging period, but we will get through it, together."

Communities and Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “Councils are playing a central role in our national fight against coronavirus and the Government continues to back them at this challenging time.

“That’s why I announced an extra £3.2 billion of support for councils to help them to continue their extraordinary efforts."
